The Robe. The Ring. The Sandles.

First, the finest robe.  You find that the finest robe was used only during times of celebrating such as births or festive occasions.  It is also said that it is very probable that the finest robe was actually the father’s robe.

Second is a ring for his finger.  During this time to give someone a ring was a mark of honor and dignity.  It was very likely a family signet ring a symbol of reinstatement to sonship in a well-to-do house.

Lastly, he told them to get sandals for his feet.  During this time slaves or servants did not normally wear sandals.  The son was looking to be received back as a servant, not a son but the father was saying, “No, I won’t receive you back as a servant.  I’ll receive you only as a son.”  Even in the Old Testament sandals had to be removed to be in the presence of God, on holy ground, but under this new covenant our Father is saying, “Put on your shoes, you’re worthy to be in my presence just as you are.”

What a picture this story is of the Father’s love.  It doesn’t matter what you’ve done, it doesn’t matter how far you’ve slipped, nothing can keep you from the Father’s love.  In this story, the minute the son started moving towards the father, the father ran to the son.  If you will just take a step towards your Father, no matter what your situation, He will come running to you.  He has the finest robe, a ring for your finger, and sandals for your feet.  You don’t have to return as a beaten down servant or slave, you can return confidently as a son or a daughter!  You have a purpose in your life and your Father in Heaven is waiting to start the celebration!

When Someone Else’s Win Feels Like Your Own

Some moments leave you smiling for hours—heart full, spirit light. Yesterday was one of those moments. My partner has been encouraging me to get back to blogging, saying I have a gift for storytelling. Maybe he’s right, because if ever there was a story worth sharing, it’s this one. Lately, I’ve noticed something beautiful—young ladies and gentlemen speaking to me from a place of motherhood. Some even call me Mom. It’s a title I’m slowly embracing, because I feel that, by the grace of God, I might be mentoring them or guiding them in the right direction. It’s such a humbling experience. Mom it is. There’s one young man in particular—someone I’m connected to through leadership. Over time, I’ve come to deeply admire his commitment to God, his hunger for spiritual growth, and the way he quietly lives out his faith. Yesterday, he called and invited me to walk with him through an incredibly personal milestone in his life. My heart almost burst. First, from the honor of him seeing me and cho...

Scandalous Love

"Aki niko na Jameson's hata sija fungua bado. Sijui nikunyue yote ama nisi ikunyue." The words that birthed a friendship. Jameson's.  Six years later I have great respect for that particular bottle of Jameson. God works in very mysterious ways. He has a sense of humor too. Did you know God laughs? He will place people strategically because He is omniscient and omnipotent. He knows what we don't know and see's what we can't see. At times I imagine of how God works behind the scenes on our behalf. Fighting battles that we have no idea about. Creating divine connections. Placing us in strategic positions. The day she gave her life to Christ. A few days after the Jameson's incident. Never had I encountered a more determined person. She meant it. Life had given her a few blows. She had done all that there was to be done. But still, nothing worked. The only thing she hadn't tried was God. She had approached me for advice. I offered her God instead. ...

Believers But Still Unequally Yoked

When finding a mate, we are often told to look for someone within the church community. The basis given for such advice is the verse, “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers” (2 Corinthians 6:14). For those of us who don’t know what being “yoked” means. A yoke is what joins two oxen who are meant to carry a cart together. If one ox is pulling in one direction a lot more than the other, then the oxen will not be carrying the cart well. They may end up wanting to move in different directions. This verse serves as the foundation for Christian marriages. A christian should marry another christian. Otherwise, you will end up with someone with a different belief and moral system. Someone who doesn’t know God and will lead you away from Him. However what most of us as believers also don't understand  is that being in an “equally yoked” relationship isn’t about the convenience of going for church service together, or being able to sing the same songs, minister in church or ...
